The Weeknd was born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye in Toronto Ontario, Canada on February 16, 1990.
He was the only child of Makkonen and Samara Tesfaye who were Ethiopian Immigrants.
After his parents split up Abel was raised by his mother and grandmother and only saw his father a couple of times.
As a child he would attend the Ethiopian Orthodox Church with his mother.
Abel was a wild teenager. He began smoking pot at the age of 11 and then moved onto harder drugs and would often shop lift to support his drug habit.
He left both school and his home in 2007.
Career
2010: Abel met Jeremy Rose a producer and the two of them collaborated on some songs.
Three of those songs Rose kept “What You Need,” “Loft Music,” and “The Marriage” (Other songs he gave Weeknd with the stipulation if they were used in the future he, Rose would receive credit, which he did years later.)
Weeknd uploaded the 3 songs to YouTube under his stage name and his songs drew attention.
2011: Tesfaye Released a mixtape “House of Balloons” which earned him early acclaim. He also began a tour of Toronto at the City’s Mod Club.

Later that year he contributed 4 songs to Drakes “Take Care Album, not only writing the songs, but also as featured artist.
He also released two more mixtapes “Thursday” and “Echoes of Silence.” After the release of the three mix tapes, Weeknd began receiving offers from recording labels.
2012: The Weeknd toured the United States with performances at venues such as the Coachella Festival. The tour ended in New York City where he had sold out back to back shows.
The tour was so successful that he decided to extend the tour to Europe performing at various festivals in several countries.
He also signed with Republic Records and released a compilation album of his mixtapes titled “Trilogy.”
Trilogy reached no 4 on the US Billboard 200 and later was certified Platinum by the RIAA and double Platinum by Music Canada (2013).

2016: Tesfaye was featured on “FML” a single from Kanye West’s album “The Life of Pablo.” He also released the title song from his upcoming album “Starboy” which went platinum.
2017: The Weeknd was featured on a number of songs by other artists including Lana Del Ray’s “Lust for Life” and French Montana’s “A Lie.”

The couple ended up breaking up in 2017, getting back together in 2018 and then breaking up again early 2019.
He admits to often using drugs as crutch when making his music but didn’t say whether he has beaten his habit or not.
In his free time Abel enjoys watching Television and is a huge fan of video games.
He also is dedicated to giving back to the community.
In 2014 He Donated $50,000 to a class teaching Ge’ez (A classic language in Ethiopia).
In 2015 he donated another $50,000 to St. Mary’s Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in Toronto and ¼ of million dollars to Black Lives Matters.
