Early Life

Aaquil Iben Shaman Brown was born on December 29, 1993 in Inglewood, California. His brother Khalif Malik Iben Shaman Brown was born on June 7, 1995 also in Inglewood, California.

The father of the two boys are unknown and their mother is Bernadette Walker.

The brother also have have another brother Michael Brown and a half-brother Floyd (Junior) Sullivan born to their mother and stepfather Floyd Sullivan (Sr.)

Their mother worked for the Army so the first when the boys were younger they moved around a good deal living in California, Mississippi, Maryland, and Texas.

After their mother left the army and met Floyd Sullivan the family moved to the notorious Ida Street Housing project in Tupelo, Mississippi. Their stepfather sold drugs when had no money to support the family, until he left the family.

Although both Aaquil and Khalif both attended Tupelo high school they became interested in music early, forming a rap group with a friend Jermiah Middle Brooks called Dem Otta St8 Boyz in 2009 while they were still in high school.

The group would work odd jobs to purchase recording equipment.

As the boys grew older they would stay out late playing their music. Finally, their mother threw them out of the house. For a time Aaquil and Khalif would live in abandon meetings where they would throw parties and rap.

The group caught the attention of P-Nasty Slaughter who convinced them to move Atlanta and participate in talent shows.

 

Career Highlights

While still in Mississippi Dem Otta St8 Boyz initially released their music through social media.

2010: The group released it’s first single “Party Animal.” The project delivered locally.

2011: Brooks left the group and was replaced by Andre “King Dre” Harris and the group moved to Atlanta at request of P-Nasty Slaughter. There they began participating in talent shows to gain recognition.

2012: The group released the mixtape “Three Stooges”. Shortly after the group went broke and dissolved. The two brothers returned to Tupelo where they worked in a mattress factory job 12 hours a day. They formed the duo for Rae Sremmurd for which they would become known.

2013: After having a couple of different stage names since their early days, Aaquil took the name Slim Jxmmi and Khalif took the stage name Swae Lee.

2014: Rae Sremmurd released it’s first single “MikeWILLBeenTwiLL”, Later they released what was their first official single “No Flex Zone.”

This single began to earn the duo recognition and after a remix of the song was done by Pusha T and Nicki Minaj the duo became even more popular.

2015: The duo released their first album called “SremmLife.” This would be their breakthrough album. Two singles from the album were certified Platinum by the RIAA.

The album itself also won a BET award later that year for the best group of 2015.

2016: Rae Sremmurd released its second album “SremmLife2.” A single from this album entitled “Black Beatles” Reached number 1 on the Billboard charts.

The duo also started their own record label SremmLife Crew Records and released their first project under that label “Trail Mix”.

2017: SremmLife Crew Records released Impxc4 “One of A Kind.”

2018: Both Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee began working on solo album and later that year they released “SR3MM” a triple album consisting of each member’s solo album and an album by the duo.

2019: The Duo is set to release their 4th album and both partners are also working on single albums as well.

Altogether the duo has released 3 albums and 3 mixtapes as well as 13 singles, as of 2019. They have also released 24 music videos.

Many of their singles have either gone platinum or gold and of their 3 albums the first two were certified platinum by RIAA.

Personal Lives

Slim Jxmmi keeps his personal life pretty much private. There is very little known about who he dating or has dated in the past and nothing about what he likes to do outside of making and promoting music.

Swae Lee on the other hand seems to have made his dating life an open book having dated model Celina Powell in 2016, Instagram influencer and model Marliesia Ortez from 2017-2018 and Blac Chyna in 2018.

In 2016, a suit was filed by a Michigan man claiming that Rae Sremmurd threw water bottles into a crowd of fans and one of the bottles hit him in the nose causing significant injury.

In 2017 Swae Lee threatened to counter sue the man for lying stating neither he or his brother threw anything into the audience. There is no further information on the suit at this time.

In January 2019, Slim Jxmmi was involved in a street fight in New Zealand where one person ended up stabbed. Swae Lee was not present at the time.
