John Cena was born John Felix Anthony Cena Jr. His birth date was April 23, 1977. His birthplace was in West Newbury, Massachusetts.

His father is half Italian named John Felix Anthony Cena, while his mother is the daughter of Tony Lupien – a former baseball player. Her name is Carol Cena.

He has 4 siblings – an older brother named Stephen and three younger brothers named Dan, Matt and Sean.

The Cena family is Catholic and this influenced John Cena’s enrollment in the Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Cena later transferred to Cushing Academy, a private prep boarding school, to complete his high school education. This boarding school is located in Ashburnham, Massachusetts.

Career Highlights

1999: John Cena began his wrestling career by first training to become a wrestler. He joined Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW) an independent pro wrestling company based in California.

Cena was known as “The Prototype” a semi-robotic character. He fought in many fights, eventually becoming the UPW Heavyweight Champion in April 2000.

2000:  Cena, under the ring name “The Prototype” made his unofficial debut for World Wrestling Federation (WWF). He lost to Mikey Richardson in a “dark match” or non-televised match on SmackDown taping.

2001: He defeated Aaron Aguilera in a tryout match. Cena also did many tryouts and wrestled many enhancement talent wrestlers.

He also signed a developmental contract with WWF and was assigned to the Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) where he held the OVW Heavyweight Championship for three months.

He also won the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship with Rico Constantino for two months.

2002: John made his WWE debut on SmackDown by challenging Kurt Angle. It was near-win for Cena as he lost the match by a pinning combination.

His performance was commended by the likes of Billy Kidman, Farooq, Rikishi and The Undertaker.

He defeated Chris Jericho at “Vengeance” and he also defeated Chavo Guerrero in WWE Velocity taping.

John Cena partnered with Edge in a feud match against Los Guerreros (Chavo and Eddie Guerrero). Cena and Edge lost the match.

He also defeated Albert and D-Von Dudley on Velocity. He partnered with Billy Kidman for the first WWE Tag Team Champions on SmackDown. They lost in the first round.

In October, Cena blamed Kidman for their loss and attacked him.  He went on to defeat Kidman in a singles match. However, in a rematch on SmackDown a week later, Kidman defeated Cena.

At “Rebellion” an annual professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event, Cena and Dawn Marie lost a mixed tag team match to Kidman and Torrie Wilson.

2003: Cena joined forces with Bull Buchanan, also known as B-2. The latter helped Cena to pick victories against Rikishi and Chavo Guerrero on the January 2 and 9 episodes of SmackDown respectively.

Both partners were unsuccessful in the 2003 edition of Royal Rumble. They also failed to win the WWE Tag Team Championship from Los Guerreros.

He gained upset wins over Eddie Guerrero, The Undertaker, and Chris Benoit. He also won the number one contender match for the right to fight against Brocks Lesnar who was the reigning WWE Champion. At “Backlash” Lesnar defeated Cena by pinfall after an F-5.

He also lost a singles match against The Undertaker in “Vengeance”. In a rematch on SmackDown, he also defeated the Undertaker. In a tag team match, Cena and A-Train defeated the Undertaker and Orlando Jordan.

He lost the United States Championship to the Champion Eddie Guerrero in a “Parking Lot Brawl”. He also lost to Kurt Angle at “No Mercy”. Cena and Chris Benoit won the Survivor Series.

2004: John Cena was eliminated at the Royal Rumble Match by Big Show. He faced Big Show and Kurt Angle in a triple threat match for a WWE Championship match at WrestleMania XX. He lost to Kurt Angle by submission.

He won the United States Championship from Big Show at WrestleMania XX. He was stripped of the title by Kurt Angle after attacking an official. He won the US title again from Booker T. In the following week he lost to Carlito Caribbean Cool by drop.

Cena was involved in the filming of the “The Marine” and returned in November to defeat Carlito for the United States Championship. He also defended the title against Jesus (Aaron Aguilera) in a Street Fight.

2005: Cena defeated Kurt Angle at “No Way Out” and became the number one contender for the WWE Championship. Cena lost the United States Championship Orlando Jordan following interference from John “Bradshaw” Layfield (JBL).

Cena defeated JBL to become WWE Champion for the first time. JBL took the original belt claiming he was still the champion while Cena had a spinner belt made for him.

He also reclaimed the original championship belt in an “I Quit” match at “Judgment Day”.

Cena was drafted to RAW from SmackDown through an annual draft lottery. He defended his title against Christian and Chris Jericho in a triple threat match.

This year, Cena defeated Jericho in a “You’re Fired” match. He was still champion after losing to Kurt Angle by disqualification at Unforgiven, pinning Shawn Michaels at “Taboo Tuesday”, and pinning Angle at “Survivor Series”. He retained the WWE Championship in an Elimination Chamber match.

Carlito was the last wrestler to be eliminated. However, Edge capitalized on the opportunity to cash in his “Money in the Bank”. Edge used two quick spears and pinned Cena to win the title.

2006: Cena reclaimed the WWE Championship at Royal Rumble. He also defeated Triple H to retain the title.

He lost the title again to Rob Van Dam at One Night Stand. In this match, he got lots of jeers from the audience and the match was interfered with by Edge.

Edge defeated Cena and Van Dam in a triple threat match. Cena won back the title in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match at Unforgiven. The venue was chosen by Edge and it was in the Air Canada Centre in Edge’s hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In an inter-brand match, Big Show and Cena were defeated by King Booker to retain the World Heavyweight Championship… of course with interference from non-wrestler Kevin Federline.

2007: He defeated the undefeated Umaga at the pay-per-view event, “New Year’s Revolution”. Cena retained the WWE Championship.

Cena became a double champion as he joined forces with Shawn Michaels to defeat Edge and Randy Orton for the World Tag Team Championship.

He defeated Shawn Michaels to retain the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 23.

Cena and Michael lost the tag team championship Matt and Jeff Hardy.

At “Judgment Day”, Cena defeated The Great Khali through submission to retain the WWE Championship. He also defeated the same opponent by pinfall at “One Night Stand”.

Cena defeated Randy Orton at SummerSlam. However, in a rematch at “Unforgiven” Randy Orton defeated Cena by disqualification.

Cena suffered a torn pectoral muscle during a match in October with Mr. Kennedy. He was stripped of the title and underwent surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospitable in Birmingham, Alabama.

2008: At Royal Rumble, Cena made a surprise return as the final participant and won the match. He eliminated Triple H.

He cashed in his title shot against the reigning WWE Champion Randy Orton. Cena defeated Randy Orton in “No Way Out” but could not get the title as it ended in a disqualification.

At “Backlash” he was eliminated by Randy Orton in a fatal four-way elimination match involving him, Orton, JBL and Triple H – who eventually won the match.

Cena failed to win back the WWE Championship title from Triple H at “Night of Champions”.

In August, Cena and Batista won the World Tag Team Champion. They defeated Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase. However, they lost the title to the former champions a week later.

He defeated Chris Jericho in November to win his first World Heavyweight Championship. At “Armageddon” he defeated Jericho to retain the title,

2009: At “Royal Rumble”, he defeated JBL but lost the title to Edge at “No Way Out”. He won a rematch for the title at WrestleMania XXV by defeating Big Show and Edge in a triple threat match.

At “Backlash” Edge, with interference from Big Show, defeated Cena in a Last Man Standing Match.

Consequently, he defeated Big Show at “Judgment Day” and at “Extreme Rules” in a submission match.

Cena lost to defending WWE champion Randy Orton in a triple threat match also involving Tipple H at Night of Champions”.

At SummerSlam, he lost to Randy Orton and failed to reclaim the WWE Championship. He defeated Orton in the “I Quit” match to reclaim the WWE Champion. However, in Hell in Cell match, he lost the title again to Orton.

At “Bragging Rights” he defeated Orton to reclaim the title in a 60-minute Iron Man match. He also defended the title against Triple H and Shawn Michaels at “Survivor Series”, but lost it to Seamus at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs.

Cena competed and won the crown of “2009 Superstar of the Year”. He defeated the likes CM Punk and Randy Orton amongst other superstars to win the honor.

He failed to reclaim the WWE Championship title from Seamus in the last RAW episode of the year.

2010: Cena was eliminated by Edge to win the Royal Rumble. He regained the title at the “Elimination Chamber” PPV match. However, he lost the title to Baptista.

In WrestleMania XXVI he defeated Baptista for the title. At Extreme Rules, he also defended it successfully.  In an “I Quit” match at “Over the Limit, Cena won Baptista one more time.

Cena fought CM Punk and in the June episode of RAW at the main event. However, he was attacked by The Nexus. He lost the WWE title at Fatal 4-Way match against Sheamus.

Following the interference from the Nexus, he lost the rematch to Seamus in a steel cage match at the Money in the Bank.

Cena joined forces with Edge, Chris Jericho, John Morrison, R-Truth, The Great Khali, and Bret Hart to form an alliance that defeated The Nexus at SummerSlam. The match was also won with the help of Daniel Bryan, a former Nexus member that replaced The Great Khali.

At Hell in a Cell, Wade Barrett defeated Cena. This defeat forced Cena to join the Nexus. At Bragging Rights, Cena and David Otunga won the WWE Tag Team Championship against Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre.

Cena and Otunga lost the WWE Tag Team Championship to fellow Nexus members Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel.

At Survivor Series Cena officiated in WWE Championship match between Orton and Barret. Orton won the Match and Cena was “fired” from WWE. He cost Wade Barrett to lose the WWE Championship in a rematch with Orton.

In December, Cena faced and won Barret at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs in a chairs match. He was rehired by Barret based on stipulations before the match.

2011: At Royal Rumble, Cena eliminated most of the Nexus members. He was eventually eliminated in the final by The Miz who was WWE Champion and not part of the match.

At the Elimination Chamber match, Cena became victorious to face The Miz at WrestleMania XXVII for the WWE Championship.

On the February 21 episode of Raw, Cena team up with The Miz to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. They won it from Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater. However, their rematch clause was immediately invoked and they won the title back after The Miz attacked Cena.

Cena faced The Miz but was defeated after The Rock performed a “Rock Bottom’ on Cena.

At Extreme Rules, Cena defeated The Miz and John Morrison to become WWE Champion. He went on to successfully defend the title against The Miz at Over the Limit in an “I Quit” match.

He also defeated R-Truth at Capitol Punishment to retain the title.

Cena lost the title to CM Punk at Money in the Bank. Cena challenged and defeated Rey Mysterio to become a WWE Champion for a record ninth time.

Punk defeated Cena in Championship Unification match at SummerSlam. He beat Alberto Del Rio at Night of Champions to become WWE Champion for the tenth time.

He was defeated by Alberto Del Rio in triple threat Hell in a Cell match that also involved CM Punk. The Miz and R-Truth interfered in the championship rematch between Cena and Alberto, with the latter retaining his title at Vengeance in a Last Man Standing match.

Cena teamed up with The Rock to defeat The Miz and R-Truth at Survivor series.

2012: Cena fought Kane to a draw at the Royal Rumble, and then defeated him in an Ambulance match at Elimination Chamber.

At WrestleMania XXVIII, Cena faced and lost to The Rock who countered Cena’s attempted “people’s Elbow” with a “Rock Bottom” for the pinfall.

He defeated Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules. He was defeated at Over the Limit by John Laurinaitis courtesy of interference from Big Show. Cena defeated Big Show at No Way Out and Laurinaitis was fired.

Cena won the Money in the Bank ladder match. He cashed in his contract on CM Punk. He won by disqualification after interference from Big Show.

This made Cena become the first person to cash in a Money in the Bank contract and not win a title. He lost to CM Punk at SummerSlam.

Cena was sidelined for a while by a legitimate injury but returned at Survivor Series to be pinned by Punk in a match which also featured Ryback.

He lost to Dolph Ziggler over an alleged relationship with AJ Lee. Ziggler defeated Cena at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs. He lost in a ladder match for his money in a bank contract.

2013: Cena then defeated Ziggler in a singles match in on Raw in January. He won the Royal Rumble match for the second time. Cena defeated Rock at WrestleMania 29 to win his eleventh WWE Championship.

He retained his championship against Ryback in a Last Man Standing match at Extreme Rules.

He also defeated Ryback in a Three Stages of Hell match at Payback. At Money in the Bank, he defeated Mark Henry. At SummerSlam, he lost the WWE Championship to Daniel Bryan. Triple H was the special guest referee.

He returned at the Hell in a Cell to defeat Alberto Del Rio to win his third World Heavyweight Championship. He successfully defended his championship against Damien Sandow, Alberto Del Rio, in October 28 episode of Raw and Survivor series respectively.

At the TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, Cena lost the World Heavyweight championship to the WWE Champion Randy Orton in a unification title match.

2014: At Royal Rumble, Cena lost the rematch for the unified WWE World Heavyweight Championship to Randy Orton. He was distracted by The Wyatt family. This family also caused him a match at Elimination Chamber.

At WrestleMania XXX, Cena defeated Bray Watt. Following repeated interference from the rest of the Wyatt family, at Extreme Rules, Wyatt defeated Cena in a steel cage match. At Payback, Cena buried Wyatt under multiple equipment cases.

Cena defeated Kane in a stretcher match to qualify for the ladder match for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank.

Cena won his 15th world championship. He retained the title at Battleground in a fatal four-way match against Roman Reigns, Randy Orton and Kane. At SummerSlam, Cena lost the championship to Brock Lesnar in a squash match,

2015: Cena defeated Rusev at WrestleMania to win the United States Championship for the fourth time. At Elimination Chamber, Kevin Owens defeated Cena, but Cena won the rematch at Money in the bank. He also defeated Rollins to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for the fifth time at Night of Champions

2016: Cena lost a couple of matches to AJ Styles before going to film “American Grit” season 2.

2017: At Royal Rumble, Cena defeated Styles. He defeated Rusev in a flag match at Battleground

2018: Cena lost to The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34. He defeated Triple H. He competed in a tag team match by teaming up with Bobby Lashley to win Elias and Kevin Owens.

He was awarded the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award Winner by Sports Illustrated.
