ASAP Rocky’s real birth names are Rakim Athelaston Mayers. He was born on the 3rd of October, 1988.

His mother’s name was Renee Black. She named him Rakim Mayers after her favorite hip-hop hero, a one-half of the duo Eric B & Rakim.

ASAP Rocky has an older sister named Erika B. Mayers, who was named after the other half of the hip-hop duo, Eric B.

His father was jailed for selling drugs and he died in 2012.

He has an older brother who taught him how to rap. ASAP Rocky adopted his brother’s French Braids hairdo style. Unfortunately, when he was 13, his brother was killed in Harlem.

Following the death of his father and brother, ASAP Rocky was left with his mother and sister, they moved around homeless shelters in New York as they didn’t have money to rent.

2007: He joined ASAP Mob – a hip-hop musical collective based in Harlem, New York. This is where his stage name “ASAP Rocky” was adopted from. Members of this group include the “ASAP” moniker in their names.

2011: He released his single titled “Purple Swag” in July and this became an instant hit. In the streets of New York the song even became sort of an anthem.

“Peso” another single from ASAP Rocky received airplay on the popular Hot97 – a New York-based high profile radio station. The airplay comes about within weeks after the song was leaked online.

He started receiving attention from several record labels after he released a music video of his single “Purple Swag”.

He performed at the Pitchfork Music Festival – an annual summer music festival organized by Pitchfork Media and held in Union Park in Chicago, Illinois.

In September of this year, he performed as a guest rap on Rihanna’s “Cockiness (Love It)” at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards.

2013: “Long. Live. ASAP” was released in January 2013 as the first debut album for ASAP Rocky. This album had many producers that included Clams Casino, Hit-Boy, Friendzone, A$AP Ty Beats, Soufein3000 and Joey Fat Beats.

Personal Life

ASAP Rocky is not yet married. He has dated Australian Rapper Iggy Azalea from 2011 to 2012.

In 2013 he started dating model Chanel Iman. Both were reported to be engaged in April 2014, but they separated in June 2014.

He loves seafood and is a confirmed pescetarian and a vegetarian.

He has been involved in many legal incidents in his career. He was jailed for weeks in Rivers Island prison for drug dealing in 2004.

In 2012, he was arrested for allegedly participating in a brawl in Manhattan. That year, he was also sued for allegedly violently attacking an innocent man who spotted him doing illegal drugs in a New York clothing store.

He was also arrested and charged for assaulting two amateur photographers who took pictures of his attack on the innocent man. The case ended in a plea bargain as he pleaded guilty to grand larceny.

In 2013, he was charged “with misdemeanor simple assault, a class two misdemeanor” for allegedly assaulted a woman during the Budweiser Made in America Festival. The case was settled out of court in 2015.

He got involved in a fistfight in New Zealand after he refused a man to board the elevator. This happened in 2016.

In 2019, a video appeared that showed ASAP Rocky holding a bottle while barking at a man kneeling on the ground while holding his face.

In July 2019, he was arrested and charged by the Swedish police for aggravated assault against one Mustapha Jafari.

He and his bodyguard allegedly beat, kicked, and cut Mustapha with broken bottles while on the ground. This resulted in several body injuries to Jafari. This case drew widespread media attention that also involved support for Rocky from the US President Donald Trump.

Rocky was found guilty and convicted for assault on August 14, 2019. He was given a suspended prison sentence and had to pay SEK 12,500 as damages to Mustapha Jafari- the victim.
