Kingged.com Is shutting down access to some countries…

Profile photo of admin Submitted by admin May 28, 2016

Hello Kinggers,

After 3+ years of fighting an excruciatingly difficult battle with spammers, hackers, etc, we now have no choice…

Kingged.com is shutting down access to some countries…

shut-down

Yes…

… shutting down access (indefinitely) to many IP addresses of people from countries like:

  • China,
  • India,
  • Pakistan,
  • Russia,
  • Bangladesh
  • and a few other countries.

.

And no, Kingged.com itself is not shutting down. We plan to be here for the long haul.

Gotcha, 😉

gotcha

Seriously though, we were forced to make this decision to shut down access to many IP addresses of people from these countries because of the seemingly never-ending barrage of hacking attempts, massive spam and worse, DDoS attacks that go on for hours on end.

If you have been a member for a while, you will remember when these attacks brought the site down for DAYS.  Well, even worse attacks are still happening all the time, but thanks to our security setup with Sucuri, Cloudflare and our host, we are able to keep a lot of the attacks from always causing havoc.

sucuri

But even with Sucuri helping us and our 24/7 support team always banning guilty members within minutes of them joining, it’s still a losing battle, considering the incredible amount of time and resources devoted to this daily.

We have had 2 to 3 staff members working 24/7 on this for YEARS, moderating/deleting posts of, and even banning dozens to 100+ spam accounts every single day.

See example of what the situation was before we shut down access for these countries:

banned-spammers

banned-spammers2

banned-spammers3

Again, we have always had 2 to 3 staff members working 24/7 on this for YEARS, moderating/deleting posts of, and even banning dozens to 100+ spam accounts every single day.

That’s why you haven’t seen a SINGLE spam post or spam comment that has gone live anywhere on the site, since 3+ years that we started.

But despite all these, it’s still not slowing down new attacks and spammers at all. It’s a constant cat-and-mouse game that is a massive drain on time and resources.

A large chunk of the over $300,000 that we have spent on Kingged.com over the last couple of years has gone into just paying the wages of our 24/7 staff members and programmers, to help keep the spammers and hackers from polluting things here. That’s just too much money to keep spending on a battle we can’t win.

Until we have a gazillion dollars to dedicate to this, we would rather spend the time and resources on other activities that help move Kingged.com forward. That’s definitely better, even if we end up with few high quality members, than battling spam and all sorts of attacks all day long.

If you are in any of these countries, and your IP address is affected, and you can’t access Kingged.com… but you are a valuable member, don’t worry – we have got you covered and can still get you in, :)

got-you-covered

Yes, we will still be allowing valuable members in, even if they are affected.

But only those who have added REAL value since they joined Kingged.com, even if they are in any of the affected countries.

Please email us here using this email address: info AT kingged.com if you are affected and include your Kingged.com username in the message. We will check and let you in, but only if you have indeed been a valuable Kingged.com member since you joined.

If someone you know is also affected and can’t access Kingged.com but has been valuable since they joined, please tell them to do the above.

Again, we will only do this for those who have added value since they joined Kingged.com.

If you have only mostly come to share posts but haven’t added value in your engagement with other posts on Kingged.com, we are sorry but we won’t let you in, if you are affected.

Moving forward we are strongly focusing more on “quality” rather than “quantity”.

We will be very happy with only 1,000 active and very valuable members, rather than 100,000 inactive and low quality members who only come to “take” but not give back to the community.

Thanks for understanding,

    Reserved for FAQs,

Oooh…that was evil!!! Here I thought Kingged was really shutting down. So many websites do. Yes, you got me. 😉

It’s a pity that such activities wreak such carnage on the Internet. And there are good people in those countries, not just scammers and spammers. I know so many great people in India, for example, some of whom are on this platform (Uttoran, Philip,Ivan, for example).

I hope you won’t lose those good people while trying to combat the forces of the Dark Side.

Hahaha, yep, a bit evil, 😈

I wanted to make this post fun, and good to see it worked, 😉

You are very right about the need not to lose the good people from these countries. That’s why it even took me this long to make the decision.

And that’s especially why I came up with the solution to still allow our valuable members in. We have already contacted lots of our valuable members from the affected countries and I will be personally ensuring they can still get in here without problems.

    Thanks,

    Kingsley

    Ahh you got me Kingsley!

I really thought you were shutting down Kingged.com for good!

I am very glad to hear that is only for security purposes.

I can only imagine the amount of spam and hackers the site must be going under attack daily. Especially as the site grows!

That is good you are taking these actions, it will definitely help a lot. And I don’t think you have to worry about the brand’s growth. I believe if you actually spend more time and resources to optimize the entire design and layout of the site, you can become one of the number one blogging community online. I can tell Kingged.com is still evolving (even after 3+ years online).

Thanks for all the work you guys are doing!

I appreciate the effort and hours put into making this a great blogging community!

    Much success to all! 😀

Yes, Freddy, we are not really shutting down. I wanted to make this post fun, and good to see it worked, 😀

And yes, we had to do this, not just for security purposes but to allow us focus more on doing the things that actually move Kingged.com forward, rather than spending all day fighting spams and attacks.

Of course even with this block, the spams and attacks will continue, but won’t be as intensive as they were before. Having to go through proxies and what not will slow them down a tad bit, 😉

Thanks for your kind words and hopes for Kingged. I am confident we can make a mark for sure, especially now that we will be more focused on “less” members.

It’s certainly not the number but the quality of membership that is important! For example, you alone are worth 100+ low quality members, and that’s the truth!

I know how it can be stressful to keep fighting hackers and spam. But you have to do what you have to do. Hopefully the bloggers within those countries will get the message on time.

    Hey Kingsley,

Although I’m not as active as I’d like to be, this one really got me. It actually made me realize that I’d been taking the value that Kingged provides for granted.

Seeing that subject line made me actually feel like I felt when my first girlfriend broke up with me some 15 years ago.

Anyway, your decision is quite understandable.

Anyway, good to hear you will be more active from now on, Dan. As you obviously know – there’s a lot to gain from being active and valuable here. Moving forward we are now going to concentrate a lot on quality of members and their participation, not quantity.

YOU FU**ING………. 😀 I was already thinking about suing you while the page was loading (don’t know on what grounds but…)! Anyway, I also understand that you have to do something 😉

I was also checking the date even though I was pretty sure that the first of April was already over 😀 haha

And a last thing: please add my IP to the white list if you are planning to cut access for Costa Rica (are there any spammers in Costa Rica???), thanks!

    • Profile photo of Janis Searcey-Griffin Profile

      Dani,

I check my security on my WordPress sites often, and I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen Costa Rica on the list of attackers.

    • Profile photo of admin Profile

      Dani,

Hahaha, I certainly deserved being sued for getting you all worked up. 😳

It was a very tough decision and I had to find a way to make it a bit more fun, rather than gloomy news. Good to see it worked,

No, Costa Rica is not among the countries affected. But even if it was, you will certainly still be allowed in, no questions asked. Same with other valuable members affected.

Thanks for understanding why we had to do this though. And of course thanks for your super super awesome participation since you joined. You haven’t failed to add value with every single activity you have performed here.

And that’s what am talking about – one of quality Kingger like you is obviously more than 100+ low quality members, so this decision makes sense!

credit to the staffs who moderate and monitoring the platform. i’m sure you guys spent a lot of time to maintain this platform. i believe all the members have to work hard together to make here a better place.

the decision to shut down access from certain countries is understandable and I must say is a good move too.

    Cheers

Thanks for understanding the need to do this, Jason.

I remember visiting your blog a while back and noticed you guys had removed commenting option. I am sure that was partly (or mostly) because of spam, right?

Just crazy the amount of spam/hacks happening today. And sadly it will only get worse :(

Anyway, hopefully we can reverse this decision later on, when we have enough time/resources to continue the fight.

    Goodness, you scared me, Kingsley!

I was already going to freak out about losing this lovely community when… *sticks tongue out* ^^

I completely understand having to deny access to members from those countries for security reasons. As sad a measure as it is, there’s no feasible workaround other than what you already offered for high value members of the community who live in those countries.

That reminds me to be GLAD my country (Italy) isn’t listed. :)

Thanks for the (scary headline!) update, Kingsley.

Sorry I scared you, Luana. It was a pretty tough decision and I had to make it a bit more fun, 😉

And don’t worry – with the help of valuable Kinggers like you, Kingged.com will still be here for many more years to come.

In fact, I am sure this is just the beginning of how valuable we can be as a community, especially as we have now shut down access to most of the spam we have been dealing with these past years.

Yes, we will still be allowing our valuable members from these affected countries in. I will be personally ensuring they can still get in.

    Kingsley,

I feel the pain. Since your announcement to shut down this traffic, I think they all headed over to my WordPress sites. Just kidding there, but seriously, I manage several WordPress sites and they are repeatedly attacked, mostly by visitors from the countries you mentioned. Unfortunately, I do see a lot of visitors from the U.S. that disrupt security also.

Some of the WordPress sites are local businesses, so turning off many countries works fine as foreigners don’t need to be on those sites anyway. Then there are the sites like yours that want visitors from anywhere on the planet and have a tough decision to make when it comes to turning them away.

These hackers must love their work though because they don’t give up. I can only imagine that you will love the decision you made in spite of how hard it must have been to do that.

    • Profile photo of admin Profile

      Hey Janis,

Good to see you adding some humor to this, :)

I had to add some humor as well because it’s a pretty tough and sad decision to make, especially as there are LOTS of very good people from these countries.

But either that or we get dragged down. If we get dragged down and shut down, then we lose completely and can’t be of benefit to anyone.

Thankfully with the solution I have come up with, the good and valuable members from the affected countries can still get in.

About your WordPress sites getting attacked repeatedly, it’s sadly going to get worse because, yes, these spammers/hackers have a lot of time/tools on their hands and won’t give up. But good that your sites are local business sites, so shutting off traffic from other countries should help somewhat.

About traffic from US also disrupting security, that’s very true of course, but not as much (in our case) as those from these affected countries.

Thanks for adding your thoughts to this, and of course thanks for continually adding value in your participation here.

To tell you the truth – if I didn’t have access to the kind of funds I have had these past years, we certainly would have shut down multiple times already.

It’s crazy dealing with the amount of spam and hacking attempts on a daily basis. And the more we ban some of the members, the stronger they come back to hit us even harder.

Anyways, this block certainly won’t stop all of them, but will slow down some of them.

    Hi Barbara,

I use WordPress plugins to block out spam.

Akismet, its built into the WordPress core. Its Free for individuals.

WangGuard I use the free version on the plugin.

WordFence, I use the premium version of this plugin.

All these three plugins are configured and monitored on all my WordPress sites.

I also use the SUCURI plugin (free version) to scan each of my websites everyday for hacked files and/or Malware being inserted.

There are a lot of tutorials on how to configure these plugins on the net.

Fortunately, these plugins can just be installed and allowed to run with the minimum of configuration.
